Our Mission
Our Mission
The mission of our community of believers is to be
“Alive to God and the World through discipleship, worship, prayer, and service”
It is deeply rooted in several key biblical themes.
It balances both vertical spirituality (relationship with God) and horizontal responsibility (engagement with the world and community).
Here, below, are some strong biblical foundations for each phrase and theme that make up our mission statement:
1. “Alive to God”
This reflects spiritual renewal, holiness, and living in relationship with God.
Key Verses
“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
— Romans 6:11
“Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”
— Ephesians 5:14
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
— John 10:10
These verses emphasize spiritual awakening, transformation, and abundant life in Christ.
2. “Alive to the World”
This expresses engagement with society, witness, compassion, and mission.
Key Verses
“Ye are the light of the world... let your light so shine before men.”
— Matthew 5:14–16
“As the Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”
— John 20:21
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations…”
— Matthew 28:19–20
These verses support the idea that Christians are not isolated from the world, but are sent into it, with purpose and responsibility.
3. “Through Discipleship”
Discipleship is central to spiritual growth and Christian maturity.
Key Verses
“Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations…”
— Matthew 28:19
“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
— 2 Timothy 2:2
“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
— Matthew 4:19
These verses show discipleship as both learning and reproducing faith in others.
4. “Through Worship”
Worship keeps the church centered on God’s glory and presence.
Key Verses
“God is Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
— John 4:24
“Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord.”
— Psalm 150:6
“Present your bodies a living sacrifice… which is your reasonable service.”
— Romans 12:1
Worship is shown not merely as singing, but as a whole-life response to God.
5. “Through Prayer”
Prayer sustains spiritual life, dependence on God, and discernment.
Key Verses
“Pray without ceasing.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:17
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
— Acts 2:42
“If my people… shall humble themselves, and pray…”
— 2 Chronicles 7:14
Prayer is portrayed as both, as a personal devotion and as a communal practice.
6. “Through Service”
Service reflects Christ’s character and the church’s responsibility toward others.
Key Verses
“Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”
— Matthew 20:28
“Faith without works is dead.”
— James 2:17
“By love serve one another.”
— Galatians 5:13
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
— Matthew 25:40
These verses strongly connect faith with compassion, justice, and practical care, for people around us.
Spiritual Growth and Community-Mindedness
The mission statement combines:
| Spiritual Growth | Community & Service |
|---|---|
| Alive to God | Alive to the World |
| Worship | Service |
| Prayer | Mission |
| Discipleship | Compassion |
These reflect the two great commandments given by Jesus Christ:
“Love the Lord your God…”
and
“Love your neighbour as yourself.”
— Matthew 22:37–39
It also mirrors the pattern of the early church in Acts of the Apostles:
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship… and gave to anyone as he had need.”
— Acts 2:42–47
That passage may actually be one of the best overall biblical summaries of the mission statement — combining discipleship, worship, prayer, fellowship, and service in one living community.
We could also beautifully summarize the mission statement in the following verses.
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus…”
— Colossians 3:17
Or:
“For in him we live, and move, and have our being.”
— Acts 17:28
Both capture the idea of being truly “alive” in God and active in the world.
